Comments:It's not that Peshawar was real bad; but at time there are no words that can describe it. I had some fun and I think most of the people there made the best of a situation that they had rather not been in in the first place. Peshawar was something like a root canel. I've never had powder eggs or french toast made with rye bread since then and if I can help it never will again. The locals were interesting and as a whole were friendly. Pakistan is the only place I've ever been where I've had to get my rain coat cleaned after it rain because of the mud; created because of the dust in the air. Peshawar wasn't all bad, the peole stationed there were great and I had a good time there.

Comments:Work for L-3 Communications, Integrated Systems at Greenville. We keep making the Big Safari aircraft better and better. Flew on the first PIA flight in from Karachi after one of the Indo-Pakistani wars. The windows and water tower were still covered with dried mud. Played one hell of a lot of pinocle and sliced a lot of golf balls over the perimeter wall.

Comments:I was an Intercept Equipment Repairman with the 6937th. Really enjoyed the duty there. Loved fixing R390s, SP600s, AFSAV gear, etc., as fast as operators could break them. I was there during the infamous water tank paintings. Remember going outside after all night Pinochle games and seeing "I hate this damn place" painted on the water tower. It just about drove Col Gerber (sp) nuts. Always suspected it was done by GEEIA troops.

Comments:It was either Peshawar or VietNam. I was the last person from Darmstadt to have that choice. God must have loved me. Spent those months drinking, working, drinking playing ball and drinking and reading and drinking. Still don't understand why I'm not an alcoholic. It was good duty but the social life was like being on the moon. Did meet a great family at Mangla Dam. Gotta say the cooks were the greatest. We were stuck for five straight days with HOT DOGS. Lunch and Dinner - HOT DOGS. Somehow they made them taste okay. Anybody every eat powdered eggs or milk since leaving Pak? Didn't think so. Remember when they got REAL eggs in? Remeber my barracks (single floor) being across from the NCO/Officers Club.

Comments:Came to Pakistan from teaching the KW-26 for 4 years at Lackland and went right back there for another 4 years. Wound up writing the programed instruction for the KW-26. Retired a MSGT in August 1973. Became a high school counselor at Delton Kellogg High School for the next 25 years. Remember the frequent trips and good friends. The hours by the pool waiting for the final weeks to pass so I could return to my wife and three children. As someone once said, "This is a nice little base if someone would just pick it up and put it in the States somewhere".

Comments:Arriving and taking in the smells. I knew why they called it the armpit of the world. They told me there was a pretty girl behind every tree. There just wasn't any trees. The four lane bowling alley was fun especially when you tried to hit the pin boys. Watching for the C-141 to bring in mail and supplies. Was there during an earth quake. Visits to the Kyber Pass, Pindi, Lahore, sugar mill factory. Stayed down at Mangla Dam with a family. Had some great times smuggling booze off base in the water coolers for parties at Mangla Dam. Remember when the new arrivals would come and have them place a bet on the football games. We only got the games two or three weeks after they were played. If it wasn't for the rifles and radios the people carried you would have thought you were back in the bible.

Comments:Many experiences in Pakistan; both on and off base. The memories and friendships are priceless. Played flag football, softball, and coached Able basketball in 1964. Spent a lot of time at the NCO club; also at the slots. Also made quite a few trips to Mangla Dam, home away from home. Don Barnett took me on my first trip to Rawlpindi; quite an experience. I've got some pictures, but just can't remember all of the names. Besides Barnett there was Bill Evans, Russ Butcher, Willie Hopp, Wayne Fairbrother, Jim Zimmer, Al Johnson, Chick Carter, Lt. Kohanski (coached football),Vic McDonald, Jim McGuirt, and many, many more. I've heard from a few, but would love to get in contact with others. I remember a trip to Khyber Pass where Thornburg took the hat off of a Pak and put it on; thought we were all going to die. The tribesman thought it was great. We had fun, but I don't think I'd want to return. A REUNION would be nice though. "G"

There were three that had a refrig in their room, everyone was able to buy pop and sandwiches anytime, day or night. I was one of them. Comments:I was ready to go anywhere after waiting forever to leave Keesler after graduation...even Pakistan...there were so many 292's we worked six hour shifts for a while. 6am-noon; noon to 6 etc. From TV that area hasn't changed much. I remember being on the bus one day heading into Peshawar, passing a house where man had just cut off wife's head and hung it on a post. Lots of people milling about. Nothing would be done to him said the driver because he didn't live in the city. Enjoy the site.

Comments:recall Afghans & Paks were not getting along, strafing happened on occasion. Hot & humid in summer, cold winds cut right through. We supported a Catholic mission in Peshawar for orphans, toured Kohat, fishing excursion in the mountains accompanied by armed escort due to bandits. Visited a small village near Soviet border, Soviet products available at an open air market. Open air theatre consisting of a screen tacked onto two telephone poles, bring your own chair. Good gymnasium, library, and pool. Pakistanis cleaned our barracks, took our clothes to the cleaners, shined our shoes! I had their prayer sequence down for a while, now forgotten. Witnessed fanatic Muslims during Ramadan parade down the streets, flailing themselves with cords that had sharp pieces of metal attached to them, chaning while blood streamed down their bodies. Had to skiddadle quick.

Trips to The Khyber Pass, Swat State, the Mangla Dam Project, and Rawalpindi. Reading about the assasination of President Kennedy in "THE MYSTIC LAMP" (the base newspaper of which I still have a copy). Driving to the Transmitter Site through Bada Beir Village. The swimming pool (Beach) being closed, drained, and disinfected in the middle of the summer because a dependent's kid pooped in it. Pinochle games that would go on for days (a penny a point, a quarter a set, and a dollar a game). Tuna fish sandwiches at the Airman's Club. The earthquakes, cobras, kraits, scorpions, and the high daytime temperatures. Roy Orbison and who are the BEATLES?

Stayed at the Metropole in Karachi on the way in, made a stop at Mauripur airport in India as part of the leg. I have fond memories even though I was only 13 when I left, of all the young men who served along with my father. We had great fun and always had something to do. I will tell my Dad about this site I'm sure it will be a nice 81st birthday present. Thanks again for the site.

I can't remember too many of those there when I was,but may be able to locate some information and will get it to you. We also spent time flying model planes, had approx 1500 people on station and I was the Scoutmaster for the Troop 1, Peshawar. (I still have those shoulder patches and have been begged for them by collectors)As memories fade over time I can remember Dale "Rowdy" Dyer, also a "Bandit" in ELINT. Comments:This was quite a surprise to find the Peshawar "Bandits" site.....I was with the 6937th Communications Group during 1966-67. It was interesting to read the comments by others (which brought back a lot of memories). I've told my family stories about the tour but they never really believed me I guess. The recent fighting near Kabul, etc., was the only time I've been able to explain to anyone what it was really like. I worked across the dirt road in the "compound" and had a lot of trips past the snake charmers and beggers. I remember the bearer in our barracks was Ramon (sp?). He took Gary Beezer (sp?) and me to his village and I was very uneasy the whole time. I'll send my personal information so it can be recorded with the others. I've still got my "short time calendar". It was a lot cheaper there. I remember the base running out of almost everything except booze. I also remember spending a lot of time in the mail room for mail that may or may not be delivered. I remember camel saddles, house boys that shined your shoes and destroyed your laundry, tailor made suits, sunning at the pool, great basketball and softball games, and great friends. I followed my old friend Allen Watts to Taiwan and ran into a bunch of the guys from Pakistan. I remember some of the dependent wives riding those tall bicycles wearing mini skirts that would drive me nuts. I remember going to the bus to say goodbye to a friend and wishing that it was me on that bus. I remember wearing the ribbon from the Seagram's VO bottle for a short timer's ribbon for your last 30 days and finally getting on that bus and how

Comments:Served in the "Land of Unique Odors" from Feb. 68 to May 69 as a Radio Comm. Tech. My friends - AP Stan "McClain" Thomas, Capt. Rev. Feller and Gerri Behl (C141 loadmaster) helped me survive the isolation and boredom. Remember packing up all those R-390s before the Base closed and dealing with Husein with his daily: "Buckschese SOB - Tee-Kay-OK SOB." Husein chased and killed a King Cobra right in front of the 3-story Dorm with only his sandal. Brave or Stupid - is my guess? I was a keyboardist for the Daze & Knights Band and a Jazz trio group while I was there. And yes, we played the Base song: "We gotta get out of this place" every time. Also played with "Red Rose" Country Singer at the NCO club and enjoyed Earl and Msgt. Creech's company. Needless to say when I got back to Charleston, I did not re-up! They couldn't figure out why. Met some interesting folks in Kabul at the US Consulate and enjoyed playing in the band. GaryR - you did a great job on the Site! Br

Did a one-shot show on AFTV Channel 11, and worked with the Little America Theater group, which rehearsed in the elementary school and performed in the Khyber Theater, (new in '64,) in front of the movie screen! Took a picnic trip in the Pass with the daughter of the American Consul...the day a war began between Pakistan and India. We had bomb shelters dug in the ground outside the barracks, all the windows were covered with blankets inside, and mud outside (blackout). The whole tour was an adventure, but glad to fly out on Pan-Am (!) in Oct '65, to get discharged and home!

If any of you remember me or members of my family, please check in. I was very, very fortunate to have my wife, Gerri, sons, Tom and Dan and daughters Debby and Becky with me. Some of you may rememember my daughters as the "water bugs" who hung out at the pool just about every waking hour. Tom and Dan started a band and performed at the NCO Club on several occasions in 1963-64. They say their most vivid memory during these performances was dodging beer cans! Some of you may know that Dan went on to become a founding member of the pop-rock group AMERICA with two other AF brats when we were stationed in England. Comments:My first AF assignment and a real eye opener to what we had back home. Made the necessary trips to Kabul, Old City, Pindi, Thief's City - didn't make the damn though. I remember one trip up to Kyber Pass in the winter, our chauffeur from the NCO club like to have a snit 'cause I went a several feet off the road to throw my only snow ball while there. He was in a tizzy! Great time there and great memories. And what a prep job for everything else I've done since.

Comments:Was TDY'd from Crete in the early spring of 1969 and left the 6937th in November, 1969. I was among a fairly large contingent of Security Police personnel sent to assist in the base closing. Was at PAS when the Pueblo was captured (great fun!!!!), and remember patrolling the base housing (after it was closed) to prevent locals from climbing the walls and stealing stuff, (I remember a number of rather "hairy" incidents involving the locals during that period of time).

Comments:Great job on this site guys!!! I couldn't believe it when I found it today...brought back so many memories! Hope to hear from some of my old friends by posting here today. I was there on Charlie team from Oct 66 to Jan 68. Some of my friends and room mates that come to mind are Jose Villa, Ralph (Sandy) Sandercock, Rich Hopkins, Bob Pope, Dave Holiday, Ted Altizer, Jerry Fowler, Mike Nelson, Dennis Prania, Charlie Krepshaw, and I know I've left out a bunch of great guys (it's awful when your memory dies before you do). Spent many a breaks playing poker and drinking beer with these guys, and listening to Dave and his band! I got assigned to Ft Meade, Md after PAS, got out and took a job with the DOD, retired a few years ago, and now living on a hilltop in West Virginia. I'll never forget those 15 months at PAS. Thanks guys for the trip down memory lane on your web site...keep up the great job...you'll find all of us old Bandits that are still kicking around, sooner or late

Guess that I have always been on Baker Flight no matter where I was stationed. Just wanted to clarify that since I had signed as an Able but was in fact on Baker. It has been a long time ago. I also found some papers that I will send to Milt when I get them copied. I also noticed one of the vets from 6937th was looking for Larry Mayes. If it's the same Larry Mayes I knew, he went to work for NSA after the Air Force and passed away some years back.
