Comments:My dad was Deputy Commander, Lt. Col. James Fears. Severed under Col. Taylor and then Rocky Eubanks from 66 to 68. Wonderful memories as a child. The pool and theater were favorites. Still remember many of the friends of the time; Tony and Tammy Camamo lived across the street Marilynn Hanes lived next door,Jill Holden,Joanne Tortillini,Darlene Andrews, Karen Eubanks, Steven Culp, and Edwin Finch Camel, water buffalo rides and tonga rides for birthdays were a special treat. Did get to travel over the Khyber Pass a few time to go to Kabul. Saw the Taj Mahal and lived on a houseboat in Kashmire. Couldn't do that today! Dad and Mom live in Tacoma,WA Dad is 88 now. Great site! Thanks!

Comments:Been a long time but will never forget the good times that went with the not so good. Anybody remember painting the water tower and all windows with mud during he India-Pak conflict? I remember one night during an air raid we were all in first floor of new barracks, everyone was quiet as a mouse until some joker at the end of the hall came out with the old statement "War is hell". I dont think most people will ever appreciate the mission that was accomplished there.

Comments:First, thanks to Gary for posting my pictures on the site and for doing such a great job with the site. Second,a description of the pictures for clarity: The pictures are the drill team greeting the US ambassador,Mr. Roundtree, with me as his escort and Col Goerder in the background;the water tower(long shot) on 8 September 1962 and a close-up of the inscription on the water tower; one of the APs and Amin and Hussein, the Pakistani gate guards;MSgt Vic Tart,NCOIC of the APs; the AP pistol team that went to Weisbaden on a 3 week TDY and didn't get back for 60 days!; the parade was on 4 July 1962 and ,to the best of my knowledge, was the first time the US flag had been displayed in Pakistan other than the embassy and consulates and my "get out of jail free" card. I can't say that all of my memories of PAS are good ones, but they do hang around in my aging memory as unique experiences. Khair Sagalie, Val

Comments:Thanks Gary for this web site, brings back lost memories that I thought were long gone. The smells and the national bird of Pakistan (the FLY) - What a place. I remember being in the 2 or 4 lane bowling alley when Kennedy was killed. Going downtown and told not to look at the Woman - like looking at a sheet would do anything for you. My trip over there was a real eye opener to the world, for a 19 year old kid from Connecticut. We left Charlston and had to stop at Burmuda to fix the airplane. After a few hours, took off for Madrid and made it to the Azores for another fix - it job. Next was 2 days in Spain for either a new aircraft of more fix-its. Took off for Dahran, but only made it to Tripoli for more repairs and two or three more days of relaxation.(This was before SSgt Kadafi took over the country). Then it was on to Dhahran (Where I first saw grown men walking around in white sheets and rags on their heads.) Then to Karachi and the never to be forggoten(and seemed like

My wife & I attended the reunion but didn't cross paths with anyone I had worked with in the "X" area of the compound. During all these years I had never met up with anyone who had also served in the USAFSS, little less having been at Peshawar Air Station. The reunion was a wonderful opportunity to share experiences with other veterans of the 6937th Comm. Gp. We're sure looking forward to the next get-together.

I was contemplating returning for Fall Quarter when the war with India broke out. I finally made it out with a convoy from Lahore - to Kabul and then to Beirut //highly recommended//I returned to Peshawar in June of '66 and began a wonderful series of trips financed by my job as a clerk in the Personnel section. I visited Chitral/Gilgit/Hunza/Kabul/Bamyan/Skardu/India, along with my fifth trip to Khyber; Kohat/Swat...If I wasn't 'working' I could be found in the library reading up on Sub-Continent history or working out in the gym. I went back to the states in '67 and joined USASA as a comm center spec //72B// served in Chitose, Sinope and a tour with the 265th ASA co., Div Spt, 101st Airborne Div. I was part of the Security Police force that was tasked to protect U.S. property and maintain the integrity of the base. I have a lot of memories of some rather hairy moments as almost every night towards the end Pakistanis would climb over the wall (with the help of the Pak army "guarding" the outside of the wall!) and attempt to steal everything that wasn't nailed down in the old base housing. There were even attempts to breach the wall at the operations center!

Comments:It's been alittle over a month since this year's PAS Reunion that Gary, Milt, Daun & the rest of the PAS Committee put together----and, I wish it was just getting ready to start again tomorrow. The conversation comes up a couple of times a week with my wife and I as t0 the pleasure it was meeting the whole crew for the first time. The guys and their ladies were so friendly-----my wife is looking forward to the next one as much as I am. So, if you were not there this year, I surely encourage all of you to attend----you may be like myself at first-----"thinking you won't know anyone, so it would not be enjoyable"----let me assure you, that was not the case. Comments:continued from posting below - did ot realize there was a limit. We tried to knock the pin boys over - we were terrible - lots of beer 15 cents a line - 5 cents for shoes. Often took trucks to Warsak and and to visit the hill tribes. Must have been nuts!! Great pool parties and "Canadian bowling" at Warsak Club - small balls. Great Halloween party there too. Never forgot the "smell" of Pakistan - from the time the plane door opened until I left. We also flew over and back on props - no jets for us. Returned through Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It was quite a year!!! I was only 19 years old when I left to come home!!!!

Remember long flight on 121 from Charleston with lay over at Royal Hotel in Karachi. Spent a lot of time at Warsak with Wally MacIvor, wife Mary and his family and his brother Robert MacIvor and his wife Betty and kids. They were from Canada. Lost touch with them - they were great people Had a ruptured appendicitis May 1, 1960 in Pak army hospital after Powers took off in U-2. Came down with dysentery for eating hospital food. Khruschev threatened to blow Peshawar off the map. President of Pakistan Ayub Khan stated "No U.S. servicemen in Pakistan!" Paks were wonderful to us. Recently transferred several thousand feet of 8mm to VHS. Base, city, Warsak, Khyber Pass, Karachi, nomads, camels, camels, camels. Memories of tongas, Dean hotel, smoke fires, smells, dust storms, snakes, outdoor movies with chairs. No pool at base yet. Bowling leagues - tried to knoc

Comments:My wife has heard my Pakistan stories for many years. She was as interested as I was to finally meet up with some of the GI's (and others) who also spent time at Peshawar. I was with the 6937th, but never really got to know others who didn't work in the compound. Having such a mix of personnel getting together in St. Louis provided all of us an opportunity to share stories and experiences from different perspectives. We both look forward to next year's reunion and hope to see many more "alumni" attending. I appreciated getting the PAS unit patch, and would like to know where to get one of the Security Service Patches. If anyone knows please advise so I can order one. Thanks go out to all who worked so hard to put together this first reunion. It was a good time.

Charlie Flight was Red but the Bankhead Bandits, which is what Bob and I were was Black with the Yosemite Sam cartoon character with two six guns blazing. Comments:Put in a short entry last year, but no responses yet. Reunion is a great idea, but already have the dates committed. Hope another comes up in a year or so. Came to PAS from the "Elephant Cage" at Brindisi, Italy in Jan of '69 with Mike Mace of California to help close the base. Still looking for Dennis Dunkle, John Herczeg, and Gary Sagedal. Anyone remember Cliff Bales who was transferred to Clark in the PI ? He was killed by commie terrorists shortly after arriving there. Wish I cud remember the guy who pee'd in a beer can and then handed it to the Pak guard outside the wall near the old auto hobby garage ! Anybody else from southcentral PA who was there in '69, please email me. You guys maintaining this site and arranging the reunion are doing a terrific job.

Comments:I was assigned to the Radio Maint. section; however, I was the lone IBM computer maint. for approx 18 months until my relief came on board. My then wife (Dottie Hewitt) who passed away in 1988, was the base commanders sect. while we were there and she also played and sang in the "Red Rose" western band. I had a part time job as slot machine repairman for all the clubs. I know of at least four others that live here in San Antonio, and will try to get in touch with them. Jim Hatch who was first sgt for the comm maint squadron that was attached to the base, Ed Sartain who was in charge of the TV station, George White who was in radio maint. and at the moment can't think of the other. I will try to get in touch with them and give them the word..Hatch got in touch with me. I know of Ken Murphy who worked in personnel that lives in Waco, Tx. I'll try to get in touch with him also. I will not be able to attend the reunion this time because I start radiation treatments next

Planning on e-mailing him as soon as I get off this site. Already had contacted SSGT Bob Doerner that was such a good section leader. Alot of fun times with Nick Nichols, Jerry Fahey (roomie), Keith Leclair, Larry Hammond. Thanks for keeping up the site. When you look back on those days I guess you could say we all have something to thank god for and that we came out of it alive & well.

Comments:Great Web Site! After ECM school at Keesler about 12 of us were sent to the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) at Wright-Patterson, Ohio on assignment for OJT and duty. After about a year some started getting orders for USAFSS sites in Turkey. After 18 months there were 3 of us left, Joel Hand, Glen Grainey and myself. In June of 59 we received our orders for Peshawar Site A18. A great experince, I still have many memories and tales after 45 years. Found one contact that was there at the same time. Comments:Great to find this site, I thought the 6937th went out of business around 1964 and the Paks had moved in. When our small group, about four or five, arrived, we stayed at Oberoi Deans for a month, brick barracks were under constuction. We flew from Karachi to Peshawar on a Pak AF British Bristol, what a ride. Guys I recall from our group, A2C Herman Selensky, A1C James Barngrover, A2C Gary Terrell, A2C Terry Morrison, SSGT Ulyses Counts, he cleaned up playing poker. A1C Johnny Hearn was in supply, A2C Vandewalker was Air Police, A2C Kerlinger took care of the ground power units. I have B&W photos of the water tower while under constuction, barracks construction, friends, etc. Selensky visited me here in Surprise, AZ, 6/8 thru 6/10/04, first time I'd seen him since early 1960 while going thru Instructor School at Keesler. He went on to become an Elint officer on B52's and later was a pilot flying Carribou's in Viet Nam.

Comments:Great site! Enjoyed reading the entries in your guest book. Loved visiting the shops in downtown Peshawar. Riding the tongas and watching all of the things that would never happen here at home. Spent my 18th birthday with the overnight in Madrid before heading onto PAS. Couldn't believe my eyes as we flew into Karachi and like many have said, it just got worse going into Peshawar. Movie on the lawn in Karachi was unique and it was "Bye Bye Birdie" when I was there. Didn't like all the roaches in the room. Scared me to death. Barracks at PAS were excellent when I was there but heard stories from the earlier folks that life was hell when they started the place. General LeMay was the only VIP that I remember visiting the place other that when the Russians visited downtown. Shaky wasn't it? Col Goerder was commander when I was there.

Comments:I signed in a long time ago but don't see my original...I enjoyed Peshawar and Badabar. It was such a dramatic change from our sheltered life in the USA. I really enjoyed walking to town and meeting people that just wanted to shake the hand of an American. I cringe at the thought of what would happen now! My one regret is that I didn't travel more; Afghanistan, Iran, Kashmir. I have kept in touch with Bob Calnen, (Baker flight 294 analyst) for the past 35 years. And I just found Bob Kelshaw (day Ops analyst) a year ago, and my roomate, Paul Boinay(203?), just a couple of months ago. The work was espeically interesting and rewarding. I loved the 94 deg weather and the 62 deg Ops! I had an interesting experience. Several of us were asked to dinner at the home of a professor from Peshawar University. The talk was mostly political and I'm glad that I don't remember any of the conversation. I truly hope I made a good impression. I would love to attend the reunion but my daughter will be

Comments:Wayne Matthews, a member of the 6937th, told me about this website during the Memorial Day weekend, 2004. It so happens that I married his cousin in Richmond, VA in May, 1969, after returning from a tour as Senior Ordnance Advisor to the 2nd Royal Thai Army in Korat, Thailand (Feb. '68 - Feb. '69). At that time I was a Captain in the US Army and that was my third OCONUS tour. I retired from the Army as an 06 with 38 years service in 1999. I am still married to Wayne's cousin and we celebrated his uncle's (and my father-in-law's) 90th birthday together. Wayne and I love to tell "war stories" and I sure wish I had been in a unit like yours that kept together like you have. Congratulations to you all, and I hope you have a great time at your reunion in St.Louis this year! Ron Cyr Col., AUS, (Ret.)

Comments:Peshawar was really a stretch, but looking back it's a great memory. When you think that we were in a place of such danger and intrigue and a place that's so relevant to current events it boggles the mind. Comments:Back in '61 and '62 I had the pleasure(????) of serving as the Air Police Armorer at PAS. I was the founder of the drill team/honor guard and the coach on the Air Police pistol team that took a 60+ day TDY to a 1 week pistol/carbine match in Weisbaden-Col.Goerder nearly court-martialed us all. He and I didn't see eye to eye and he would have puhad my butt if I hadn't been getting out at end of tour. As many remember, the chow was awful, but the booze was cheap. I have some pics I will send in soon. The memories, some good,do linger.

Mangla Dam visits, Robbers Roost, etc. among the more interesting and enjoyable. Also remember swaying walls and antennas during earthquakes, but all in all not a bad experience. I was at the hellhole from Sept. 62 to Dec 63. Stiull have my 'Sons of Budabar" certificate and even now think I could still be adept at dung dodging. What a great thing to have a site like this. I can still remember arriving in Peshawar at the ripe old age of 17 and being sent out to install the ground wires for the towers and seeing the cobras in the field. God bless all the people that served in the armed service and still are but may he especially bless ANYONE that was at PAS. Comments:When we arrived in Peshawar, conditions were so crowded that we bunked on the gym floor for the first couple of weeks. This condition also worked to our advantage as a number of us were shipped out to Bremerhaven after 4 mo. It was an interesting and enlightning experience and I'm glad to have had it. Everybody was in the same boat (lots of diarrhea and dust). I have some good memories, like renting bicycles from our "bearer" and crusing some of the countryside. And who could forget the coba and mongoose show on the road by ops. There were a lot of good people there. Went from there to Bremerhaven and then Berlin.

Stuck there during the war painting windows a lovely shade of black and spending quality time in H barrack trenches at night. Work with an ole Ops type named Lew Casey who many of you may remember. Chief Holbrook was Personnel along with a SSgt Ahearn. Col Hyde ran the show and recently heard from his daughter on the original site. Family illness prevents attendance at reunion but it is a great idea. A far cry from todays Air Force believe me. Comments:Just checking back in. Love this site, so many memories long time buried. I was a 29232 while there, boring duty except on occasion of finding a legit signal. Would rather have been morse intercept operator. Don't recall man names while there but would love hearing from anyone that was there. Cold beer in front of air conditioners in the room, poor Paki Army cal early every morning while we sauntered to chow. Lotta softball, bowling and outdoor basketball court activities. Recall the Paki getting shot trying to get into the compound, was ere walking to work on mids after that for awhile. Wish our troops could get out of the mess we are in now. I was 294 Bandit in the trailers on Charlie Flight. 1964-1965. And yes, I do remember putting mud on the water tower during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. Right before I was supposed to come back to the world. Knowked out the runway for a while and delayed my DEROS a few more exquisite weeks in beautiful Bud-A-Ber. By the way...Do you know why we were the "Bandits"? Comments:What a site! I am really glad that we are not forgotten. I, like many others made the best of the time that I served in PAS. Trips to the Old City, Lahore, the golf course, the base theater, whatever. The duty in the compound was the best part. We were right we knew that there was nothing to fear from the Russians, but the Chinese that's another story to be written fully later. Comments:Really broght back some memories. I wonder if anyone remembers in 1958 when the Pakistan government (then in Karachi) decided on marial law?? I was on duty, night before got a phone call, Pakistan telephone operators relayed a 500 group encoded message, at the Obray Deans Hotel and I had to get to the site to have it taken care of by commanding officer. Took him to site etc etc. Too much right now- remembering things I thought were buried. There were several people that I did not see on roster. a T/SGT Armando SanMiguel, a MSGT Buford, and a Msgt or Tsgt Griffin amd a Sgt Sparkman, for starters/ hell its only been 46 years, "Zip" Joe Zimmerer a guy we called "Beenie Weenie" a

Andy Austin - I see you remember all of the dependent young ladies. You brought back a memory of Janice Vanderburg - a few of us guys met her at the BX on our first day in Peshawar and she welcomed us by telling us the dependent girls were off limits. Guess we didn't make much of an impression with her. All you ditty-boppers keep those stories coming - maybe one of the days more support folks will sign-in.

Comments:PAS was my first tour. First few weeks we worked in trailers w/fans. Wore shorts. Hotternhell! Learned how to play Hearts, Bridge, Pinochle & how to drink 10 cent beers, eat hamburgers and watch movies outside with our own chairs. Some climbed the water tower for kicks. Played a lot of softball, lifted weights and....worked. Really enjoyed being a transcriber. Remember teaching Charlie Bishop how to transcribe. Later he became a 2Lt, then Command IG when he inspected my unit where I was Commander in Alaska. He ended up as a general. I finally retired in '85...from A2C to LTC and it all started at the 6937th. Be glad to hear form anybody who's still alive that was there when I was.

I had a great time at PAS and only have good memories. Hey John Strandquist! If you see this, drop me an email! You and I were both friends with Tom Scott (quite a character!), but your tour at PAS ended about halfway thru mine. I was there from late 1968 until the base closed. I cross-trained from being a "Dittybop" to Legal Assistant in the Staff Judge Advocate's office (Major Nero). We helped with alot of the legalities of closing the base. Damn! That was a long time ago! This is wonderful to see all these pictures and names!

Comments:I was a Radio Intercept System Repairman (aka Radio Maintenace). Was at Peshawar during the infamous painting of "I HATE THIS DAMN PLACE" on the water tower. Commander's Calls were held in the chapel at the time, and I think the Base Commander thought the evildoers would confess (yeah, right) when he announced the costs, etc., involved in the cleanup. Folks from the British Consulate dropped leaflets on PAS with little drawings of the water tower -- Col Goerder was steaming. All ranks participated in that police detail! Found out later in 'Nam that some GEEIA (EIS) guys did the painting. Didn't like getting the assignment to PAS (first time overseas), but loved the work and mission. Met a lot of outstanding and dedicated people there. Been more than 40 years -- can still picture the place and smell the smells (Grin). Thanks a lot for the time and effort put into maintaining this web page. BTW, working for the Army now -- fixing computers that operators break -- can't complain

After 40 years, my most clear memories of the Pakistan experience are quite positive. Had opportunities to meet and share a bit with some Pakistanis. Comments:Gary, Have been visiting some of the old websites I reference on my website. You sure have come a heckuva way since we first made contact, superb job! The reunion sounds like a good idea, my problem is that my Vietnam outfit has a reunion every 18 months, and I'm reluctant to commit, would depend on what my financial condition is. You might want to contact Art Hug, he seems to have a mini reunion every once in awhile. Gimme a shout sometime -- Al

Comments:Left the banquet at 6910th in Darmstadt Germany for this weinee roast and found it very interesting. The sights, smells and sounds of Peshawar, Rawalpindi , Lahore and Islamabad will stay with me forever. A lot like Castor Oil. Fortunately there was a golf course in Peshawar and I played every other day. Had the same caddy. Paid him $5 a round instead of the usual 20c. He was so happy he bought a water buffalo. His father negotiated a marriage and gave the water buffalo to the girl's father. When I asked the caddy if it was worth it, he said "Yes, sahib".... He wept when I left Peshawar. Mine were tears of joy.

Comments:I know many of the "Bandits" have been wondering "Whatever happened to the "Warlord"...?" Bad news guys, I managed to survive the first 455 day tour AND a year later, another 365 days. Needless to say when I got stateside I got a discharge (no not the kind a lot of you fellas got while stationed there...you know after a trip to Lahore to see la whore...green ooze...painful peeing, "Brand X" a common diagnosis). I had almost forgotten good ole PAS until some 15 years ago, my daughter did a social studies report on, of all things...Pakistan.....I dug through a lot of memorabilia and photos and it all came rushing back. after they got me out of the straight jacket..we put together a pretty good report. she got an "A"....I guess the point I'm trying to make is, that aside from the endearing friendships that most of us ignored after PAS, and the fond memories of drunkeness and "male bonding".....what we shared can be passed on to others in tion: DOG

Comments:Love your website! Gary, thank you, the photos came out superbly! PAS was a great first tour for me; missed the family but we were in the middle of world-shaking events back then watching the Russian KYMTR, TTMTR, and CSSTR launch sites and the Chinese Lop Nor then coming on line. Brings back great memories; I will visit here often!

A native of San Antonio TX, Col Eubank was a pilot from WW II and Korea. He had the distinction of being one of the command pilots of "Flak Bait", a B-26 Marauder which is now on display in the Smithsonian. Our condolences to Col.
