Was a ditty bopper.  Met some great guys and had some good times.  Lots of trips to Mangla Dam and stayed with a great family.  One of the guys married one of the daughter in this family.  Don't remember his name.  Memory not the greatest:  Rod from Hawaii was a roommate.  also Jerry from New York, the Golden Gloves champ.  Leclair?  Great trips to play golf at the Peshawar G.C.  Will check back as memory improves.

I was a player on the basketball team.  We were scheduled to go to Athens to play in the European Theatre basketball tournament.  I didn't get to go, because my date to return to the the States was moved up a couple weeks.  I'll never forget that morning when I was awakened just after going to bed after the midnight shift.  I was told I had one hour to get packed and ready to leave.  They flew a dozen or so of us out on a c-130 to Karachi, and headed home from there.

erved as a 2-T'er from May66 to July67 and although a lot of guys will disagree, I was the best dam X1 to have come out of the site (sure!!). I may have also been one of the only two or three Jewish EMs ever to serve at the site. Although I made it through the entire 15-month without any major incidents, I did get into my share of trouble mainly by drinking a little too much (didn't we all), venturing out to places that were off-limits (not much exciting to do), playing practical jokes on the local Pakistani employees (we were all young and dumb), and getting into hot water with the lifers who hated us 2-T'ers.

I currently live in Baltimore (410-484-1474) and am working as a contractor for SAIC after a 36 year career at NSA that I was able to land in 1967 as a result of my work at Peshawar. I have a wonderful wife, two beautiful daughters, and two georgeous and very smart granddaughters for which I am enternally grateful. We also are trying to pay down our house in Sarasota that I hope to retire to before my wife and daughters ship me off to the nursing home.

Thanks for serving with me fellows. Although I'm too old and feeble to remember most of your names, I'll never forget you. Not sure that makes sen

Arrived totally lost, with the new Charlie Flight Co (2nd Lt Van D Massier) and Flight Sgt (Msgt Benson) both of whom I baby sat bringing them from USA.   Got to do exciting things (reports) and then went on special duty to the new building embassy in Islamabad. Got sick and had embassy car bring me back, where it was as if I had malingered.  AF Tech med did not agree with Embassy doctor, so of course I was not sick.

Remember the many great SOBs members.  The Peace Corp girl that rode the bycyle in her pink outfit(Pak type sari and head cloth) and her tennis shoes.  Wonder what ever happened to her?

Couls you please add my name to the rouster, don't know why my name is not there. What a culture shock going to this third world country. I am glad I was able to experience it. When people ask me where I was stationed and I tell them, I don't think they believe me. Some of the best people I had the honor of knowing were at Peshawar. How cool is it that it is so prominent in the new these days. Will join the association after the first of the year.  Thanks for puting this together.

I lived in Warsak and the only joy in my life in that hell hole was waiting for the blue airforce bus.  My family and many families adopted a serviceman from Peshawar Air Station and they became part of our families during their tour of duty. I used to visit the based and watch movies and have real milk and a real steak.  I remember Randy Hummel and a very tall man named Jesse Schakelford. They were great guys and I don't know what happened to them.  We used to open up our colony country club, pool, bowling alley and dance hall to the service men. If you participated drop me an email.

Had a detour to Turkey in Sept. '65 as Paks and Indians were at war. Craziest 14 months of my life! Really enjoyed the guys I served with, as good a crew as you could find. Been in touch with Ed Tremaine, Ron Merckle, and Jim Lightner, but unable to connect with the rest of the group over there. Did talk to John Strout(Dr. in CA) and Don Forman (semi-retired in Lake Charles, LA)

so hope to re-connect with others who may remember that strange time. My e-mail address is macknz@sccoast.net if any of you have any input. Hope all of you have a great Holiday Season!!!

Had a great time @ the reunion.  (Also had a chance for a

"grandpa playdate" w/my 3 year-old granddaughter who lives

in Columbia, Md.)

It was great to see everybody.        I'll be watching for info

about Orlando.

Many, many thanks to Milt & everyone else involved in

organizing these reunions.

Also to Gary Rutledge for his work with his website.

Without it I'd never have made the "connections" I've made

over the last year or so.

Best to all!

just back home from this year's reunion.  what a great time

we all had!  lots of new stories and remembrances.  a great

visit to the NSA museum with a most knowledgeable guide and

speaker at the banquest.

for those who didn't attend this year;        these reunions are

events that you'll enjoy, meeting new alumni of PAS and

hearing and sharing some of the best stories of being

stationed at a very unique place.  words can't express it.

oh well, just hoping more of you will make it next year.

Reunions! Be there or be forever square!!

The memories sometimes overwhelm the present and its

sometime unpleasantness, if you let them. And this si the

place. Here we are back beside the pool, in the dorms, on

trick at ops, at the Oberoi Dean Hotel, in a tonga, at the

Airmans' Club, in the theater-chapel, traveling to Swat, or

the Khyber Pass.  It was a time apart, long ago in a far

place.        Come and share, folks.        It is time!!

The standard take on Peshawar was:  "Karachi is the asshole

of the world and Peshawar is a thousand miles up it."

Nevertheless, I very much liked my assignment to PAS.

There was a lot of history there, particularly if one was

interested in British Imperial history.  A lot of action

occurred around Peshawar and the Khyber Pass.

My personal memories are of cookouts by the barracks with

Gary Rutledge, Joe Bodziony, Joe Ritacco, Rick Blessing and

others; Joe Bodziony and I going horseback riding one day

and being hit by stones thrown by villagers as we passed

through; Drinking London Lager beer at the bar of Dean's

Hotel; going to the Salateen Club; playing squash and

handball on the squash court on base; and a great fishing

trip, catching brown trout, in Swat.

Who would have guessed at the time that Pakistan would take

center stage in world events, as it has now?

I would like to make it to a reunion before too many moons

pass.

hat a great site to discover.  Just reading the many inputs

from past BAS members brings back a flood gate of memories.

I arrived there with Bob Hardwick,Phil Jacobson, and Bob

Pranski on

April Fools Day 1966 and the Squadron Commander

picked us up and took us to a shack made out of

mud just before the turn to the base and said

"OK boys this is your barracks." Needless to say

we were all dumb struck. After the April Fools

joke he took us to the base and I had a truly

great time from that time forth.  Was housed in

one of the new barracks with Gulab and Golfam as our

houseboys.

I played a lot of tennis (in 110 degree heat) with Mr. Khan

(the Pakistani Davis Cup player) and my doubles partner Bob

Kilgore.  We ended up being the base chanpions and got to

tour Lahore,

SWAT,and the old British Officers Club there in downtown

Peshawar.  I'll never forget Bob and I

being invited guests of Mr. Kahn when the Soviet team came

to play the Pakistani team.  Bob and I were seated on the

front row and I know we drove the KGB agents crazy because

I'm sure they didn't have any pictures of us and were

trying to figure out who the heck we were.

Also was lucky enough to be at Mangla Dam on the morning

that the water first

Anyone remember Billy Troemel (not sure about spelling of

last name), stole one of the big flat bed trucks one night

That 15 month tour seemed like 15 years, although it was a

fantastic experience. Wish I would have been sober more

often.        I remember of a lot of faces but names are much

harder to come by. I saw "Hog" Skinner on the list and Doug

Hi, I was just a kid (9-10 yo) when I lived there with MoM

Base...softball(coolers of beer), swimming at the pool,

outdoor movies, etc.

I have read ALL previous notes...some of you complained

about the food on Base.  We were nothing but thrilled to

eat at your Chow Hall.        I remember reeeal steak!!!  What a

USAFSS IG member John Shelton House who needs some help.

John is filing a claim for Agent Orange problems but can

not find any orders saying he was in Vietnam.  John was on

the Command IG Team from 1968 to 1972.        He made trips to

Security Service Units in Vietnam in 68,69.and 71.  He had

to leave the team during their trip in 1970, while the Team

was in Japan, before they got to Vietnam, due to a death in

his family.  If any former members has a copy of orders

with John's name on them, please send a copy so we can file

his claim.  If anyone remembers seeing John in Vietnam,

please send a statement to that effect and we could use

that as proof of being in country.  My address is  Lee R

time

we played some workers up at Mangla Dam and we faced this

pitcher who was really good!  Had a blazing fast ball, but

I was

able to hit a couple of home runs, over the fence, off him.

 We all

had a fun time.  I remember one of the guys on the team, I

his last name was Caroli.  I can still picture some of the

other

guys on the team, but I am ashamed to say that I have

Hi: Just wondering if Paul Hartman remembers playing

basketball with me(skinny red-headed guy) as coach for a

while and a guy named Larry Hawk who was a great player. If

anyone would like a copy of a DVD which runs about 17

minutes and has some of the guys stationed there taking

trips all over since I organized them during 1966-1968.I

can't remember many names but after 15 months of HELL and

getting discharged in April,1968 maybe someone can refresh

my memory.Gary also put in this site some of my memories so

check them out if interested.

from the Jimmy Hatlo file - THEY'LL DO IT EVERYTIME! Remember this? You're on a beautiful tour somewhere, i.e. Germany, Japan, Scotland, etc. or in my case, RAF Chicksands, England. You're scheduled for 36 mos. which probably means an early out from the Air Force, since you'll have 90 days left on your original 48 mos. But NO, they come up with this 2-T program. It's bad enough they're gonna send you REMOTE for 15 mos. somewhere, thereby using up that last 90 days you were going to get out early. But wait, there's more! What's that, they just changed the 2-T program eliminating the E-5 Staff Sergeant stripes? So now you only make A1C? Hells bells, you had A1C made in the shade where you where! Then you get this letter from some poor slob who's already at Peshawar telling you what a wonderful place it is, what a great bunch of guys are there and when you get there be sure to look him up if he can be of any help? He says they have basketball, a new movie theatre, swimming pool, new air-conditioned dorms (he shoulda spent a Summer on the 2nd floor of A Dorm without it as I did #*&$%#@!)and so much more! Meanwhile he says to enjoy your 30day leave in the ZI. Ok, you get to Peshawar AS and you actually look

the guy up after being there about a week.  He’s on another shift entirely – another life entirely at PAS!  But he barely remembers writing the letter? (Probably wrote it about 4am on a MID to keep from going asleep after his Supervisor ordered him to write it!) Hell, he’s going home in 30 days and you have 456 AAWU! But all in all, you make it through to the other side, you survive and you realize it WAS a special time and a special place.  And if you’re lucky you make two of the best lifelong friends from your two roommates, Richard Lemerise and John Rader, that you could ever hope to have. And if you learn anything about life, it may be that you now know why you never want to spend any time in a jail because, fond as the memories are after all these crazy years, a jail sentence is often what 15 mos. at Peshawar AS felt like!  After all, this was the place that had only four brands of beer – Bud, Miller Hi, Black Label and Schlitz – which all tasted exactly the same after spending time in the hot sun sitting on an open boxcar between Karachi and Peshawar!

Just updating some things here since the new system was

installed.  My thanks to the guys who have maintained the

web page and this Guestbook!

Some names looking for?  Charlie Clegg,Ohio; Gerald

McKenny,Kentucky; Bob Cockerham,Tennessee; Greg

Pranski,Chicago; John McCarthy,Massachusetts.

I played on Dog basketball team, which won the base

championship 1967 with John Rader and Richard Lemerise.  I

am in contact with them   Charlie Schriver and Bob Busch,

all from Dog Flight.

Observation - at that age the 15mos seemed like a jail

sentence extending through eternity? Now, 15mos passes by

too fast to even grab ahold of!

Keep up the good work here guys!
