Glad to be able to read of other's experiences at the 6937th. Besides the work, the best times for me were slow pitch and flag football. Most of us were first tour SSGTs on our flight. Might haved stayed in, but back to back tours at the 6981st and then the 37th were a bit much for me. Plus, one leave in the three and half years after training wasn't enough! An old Dittybopper. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later, I joined the Base Procurement Office and started working under the supervision of Capt. Hester, Capt. Keltler, and lately under the suprvision of Capt Powell and MSgt Brown. I was almost 20/21 when I started working for the USAF there and I was RIFed (Reduction-in-Force) out due to anticipated Base closure in 1970. Nevertheless, my total tenure over there was an unforgetable golden time for me. I would be more than happy to be contacted by any one once assigned there and/or at least known to me. I wish all the veterans a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Also many thanks to all those managed and administered this precious Website. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Times I don't want to repeat, but don't want to forget either. Remember taking the Steam train up Khyber Pass to the Afghan border. Remember taking up golf while station was "locked up" during the "wars", getting to the station as an E-2 (army had no stripes for that back then) making PFC E-3 and the few Air Force guys in the snack bar thinking I got "busted". Just realized that 50 years ago today, I spent Thanksgiving with the MacIvor family from Warsak; Wally, Mary, Allison, Dale and Candace, in the Khyber Pass. Their cook had prepared toasted cheese sandwiches and a thermos of creme of tomato soup. It was delicious! I took a lot of 8mm film over there, including that Thanksgiving day and shipped it all home sight unseen. A few years ago, on a whim, I dug all the rolls out and had them consolidated onto vhs. It is a snowy night here in St. Louis. We are going out in a few minutes to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. Later tonight, I may just pull that vhs out again and watch my Pakistan Thanksgiving, November 1960. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1 -- Saidu Sharif
Often these days my recollections go back to Swat State, a land of truly awesome natural beauty... but now a land in tremendous turmoil. In recent years, Swat State increasingly has come under the influence and control of extreme Muslim hard-liners, the Taliban, and their supporters.
This land since ancient times has been one of the homelands of the Pashtuns (Brit: Pathans). During two millenia of history, these proud and fiercely independent people have seen their land invaded and occupied at various times, but according to local legend the people have never submitted.
Alexander invaded in 327 B.C. but was unable to subjugate the people. Neither could the great Moghul king Babur in the 16th century, nor even the British Raj from 1858-1947.
Some experts believe the success of Pashtun tribes in guarding and maintaining their fierce independence for over 2,000 years is possibly due to their somewhat democratic tribal structure.
Since ancient times, Pashtuns chose their tribal chiefs for their ability to motivate and lead the people. Unlike many traditional societies, there is no primogeniture whereby a tribal chief's eldest son inherits his father's position.
The following is one of my clear recollections of the adventures experienced by a group of guys from Dog Trick on an R&R trip to Swat State 48 years ago --
It was 1961. We were having lunch at the Star Hotel in Saidu Sharif, the capital of Swat State. The hotel manager, quite friendly old Pashtun, came by to chat with us after we had finished our meal.
The conversation turned to local history, and he related to us one of his own eye-witness accounts from his boyhood days in this city.
The old Pashtun's story --
The British had a military fort just outside the city. They often sent mounted troops to patrol the roads and valleys of Swat. The Pashtuns assigned snipers to hide in the hills to harass and kill the passing patrols. As a result, British losses rose to an alarming level, forcing the local British Army commander to take action.
The commander issued a military order, which he had printed in English and Pashto and posted around the city --
"BEGINNING AT SUNRISE TOMORROW ALL PATHAN [Pashtun] ADULT MALES ON THE STREETS WITHIN THE CITY OF SAIDOO SHAREEF SHALL CRAWL ON HANDS AND KNEES. ANY PATHAN MAN SEEN WALKING UPRIGHT ON THE STREETS OF THIS CITY SHALL BE SHOT ON SIGHT."
Next morning, not one Pashtun man remained in the city. The hills were now bristling with snipers, and life for the British soldiers and their commander became much more difficult. The travails of the British Raj were very heavy indeed in the Pashtun areas.
Our main purpose to stop in Saidu Sharif was to visit the king's palace and to request his majesty's permission to travel north into the Upper Swat Valley -- since the area had been designated a "frontier area."
[Note: Swat "princely state" under the British Raj, was ruled by a Wali (king). The king we had hoped to meet was Wali Miangul Jahan Zeb, the last Wali of Swat State who remained in his palace until 1969 when Swat State came under direct rule of the Pakistani government.]
When we arrived at the palace, we discovered the king was not in, so we met instead with his First Secretary, whose name I've forgotten. We explained the purpose of our excursion into Upper Swat Valley -- to camp in the mountains and go fishing in the mountain streams.
The First Secretary kindly granted our request but on the condition that we be accompanied by three armed Pak Army soldiers to act as our guides (and maybe as body guards).
Our visit at the palace was very cordial, In fact, during our entire 4-day visit to Swat State we were treated with the hospitality (melmastia) that is such an integral part of the ancient Pashtunwali Code of Ethics. More on that later.
In addition to our Pak driver from the PAS motor pool, the members of our expedition (as I recall) included -- - Bob Lantz, 203X1, now retired in Las Vegas - Larry Spice, 203X1, Dog Trick, now retired - Gary Lacke, 203X1, Dog, retired in Naples, Florida - John Wright, 203X1, Dog, whereabouts unknown - Hugh Sloan, 203X1, Dog, now Ole Miss professor - Rand Dorsey, 203X1, Dog, retired, Iloilo City, Philippines

Then our group boarded the blue bus, made a stop at the back door of Col. Goerder's office, the colonel getting on the bus and giving us a sincere pep talk, thanking us for a job well done. And then going to the airport, boarding the plane for Karachi, and pinching myself to be sure it wasn't just a dream -- to finally be leaving.
As many others have stated, my 15-month tour at Badaber was an experience I'll never forget, but I wouldn't do it again for 86 milion dollars... hehehe.
I remember lots of old buddies -- Bob Lantz, Nick Seaman, Hugh Sloan, Gary Lacke, Bill Shofner, Larry Spice, John Wright, my roomie Dominic P. "Rags" Ragazzo, Luke Lucarelli, and my supervisor Rich Rochele. Also, the trips to SWat State, visiting Fort Kalam, the Star Hotel in Saidu Sharif, not shaving or showering for a week, so that I could dress as a Pathan, assume the identity of a Pathan and venture incognito into the Old City of Peshawar, and actually survive it all.
Best wishes to all who served. And may God bless you al.

Mike and I served together in Misawa 1966-67 before coming to Peshawar. We had just reconnected in the last week of August 2010 after more than 40 years of going our separate ways. It was good to hear his voice again on the phone and reminisce about old times, then came the e-mail from his wife yesterday about his sudden passing on Sunday. Gonna miss you, Mikey! Does anyone from trick 3 1968-69 know anything about Robert Devoue, Ed Egan, Wayne B.Lewis, George Styn, Henry Spears?
Thanks, Ted Snotherly

Played some golf at the golf course, the Dean's Hotel, I believe. The streets at PAS were still dirt, and we had to work out of the trailers for the first couple of weeks. Then we moved into the new compound facility. Been on burn detail a couple of times. Also ran supplies to the compound. Interesting duty. He was a truly dedicated supervisor. I can recall his "patrols" of the Ops areas to see that all was going well with us. He was one of the few supervisors types that would venture into our area. I remember the buffalo steak dinners and then off to another hotel to have a been on the grassy patio. I remember the trip to the Afgan border and the hours spent in "thieve city". Playing softball for the shift was enjoyable and a good time passer. I remember the old beer being brought from the back of the storage and the tearing down of one of the antenna systems. I remember the dying Tonga cart horse on the side of the road and the fresh meat sale that took place within a few hours. All that but was glad to reinlist and get out of there in just over a year, rather than the full 15 months of the tour. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: Love this site, just had to share more of my memories. I saw a picture on another site of a grave on base- If I remember right that grave was either at the front or back of the elementary school. Strange to see it there on base. I remember the consession stand near the pool --lots of great ice cream and hamburgers. My friend Douglas Humes (or Hugh) and I used to spend a lot of time there at the pool swimming. The base commanders daughter used to give us kids rides around the base on her personal tonga from time to time. The base minister had taken some of us kids off base for birthday party for a little pakistan girls birthday party. We took the train. The train was hot and overcrowded. People hanging off the sides and on the roof. During that time i had contracted Hep A from bad water. I had to go to the hospital several times a week for blood draws, screaming each time it had to be done. A medic named Buggsie or Muggsy would hold my hand . I was quarnteend to my house for weeks. Buggsie brought me candy on halloween because i wasnt able to go out. I remember the feeling of family on the base as everyone looked out for each other , as we were all in this together. All the special events that took place on the holidays- camel rides, buffalo rides, snake charmers, dancers, Booths that sold brass tables and saddle stools etc., The guys even made a bridge out of rope that we would walk across for entertainment. I remember the TV station on base (only one channel I think) that held a dance contest. Me and my platinum blonde hair, up in bun, popping in and out of the camera. The Barlow family who shared the carport at our house, and the krate snake that made its way on to the carport and under the shingle at the bottom of the wall. The bannana tree in our front yard that our gardner cut down when my mother only asked him to trim it. Beautiful poppys in our front yard untill the base commander had them all removed -wonder why? So many memories! I was small at the time but i will never forget that extraordinary experience of living on that small remote base in peshawar. My dad Robert Bahr was a dedicated service man who loved his country, taught us to respect our fellow man and to thank God each and every day for our blessings, I feel the need to thank you all for contributing to the security of our county and to the security of that little remote base in peshawar. I can still see you all as young service men and women, as my mind looks back through time into my childhood. If anyone remembers the Bahr family we would love to hear from you. God bless, Arlene Bahr. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: I am Robert Bahr's daughter. We were in Peshawar around 1966-1968. My dad was a supervisor in Able Group. The Barlow family were our neighbors I was 6 or 7 at the time. I had platinum blond hair and spent many days hot days at the pool. I remember Carl Harris and jumping out of a box to suprise him on his birthday. A base ball game where the players were on donkies, Nature Boy,Free plums outside the fire dept.,free salt tablets at the gym untill we got caught. Dad passed away 16yrs ago,but would have loved to hear from anyone who knew him. I have many fond memories of that remote base . You were all so supportive of us dependants. Thank you all for making us little Brats feel so safe and secure in such a remote, strange and far away place. God bless you all for your service . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wasn't to excited about going to Peshawar (and leaving my wife behind), but overall it was a once in a lifetime experience. My roommates were ROBERT (BOB) KRETZ and CHARLIE MULLER. We had a refrigerator in our room and sold ham and cheese and tuna sandwiches by the dozens for 25 cents each). In my spare time I recorded about everyone's record albums in the dorm. I remember PAUL BOINAY, AL FRICKE, GARY RUTLEDGE, and several others. I was delighted when I ran across this website recently, and will be a regular visitor. Would be interested in hearing from anyone that knows how to contact Bob Kretz or Charlie Muller. . . or from anyone who has fond memories of our sandwich deli. I posted a video I took in Peshawar on Youtube recently under "Warmmmtouch." It was copied from 8mm film and I'm working on improving its quality, but some of you might find it interesting. I also plan to post some photos of Peshawar, Kyhber Pass, Landi Kotal, and Badaber in the near future. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

292x1 Comments: In June 59 8 of us were the first students from Tech School to be sent to Peshawar AS (Project Sandbag according to our orders). Flew over on the USAFSS Command Aircraft, a modified KC-95 or KC-97 called "Full House" due to it's tail number. Can't remember the number but have a photo of it somewhere. Some of the 7 other students were Kerry Schoppe (still in contact with him in PA), Neil Ulman, Terrance Nolan (poss Nolden), & Zeke Bozzell. Can't remember the others. Flew from Charleston, SC to The Azores; Madrid, Spain; Tripoli, Libya; Dharhan, Saudi Arabia; & Karachi, Pakistan. Stayed at the Salateen for 2-3 days due to sandstorms. First & worst hangover ever from drinking San Miguel beer. Finally, Peshawar AS - can still feel the intense heat as we rode the Blue Goose to the base. Excellent training; loved the mission. Did the usual GI stuff - Warsak Dam & the friendly Canadians, Khyber Pass, Kohat Gun Factory, Oberi Dean hotel downtown, the "old city", & outdoor movies - we'd buy cane/bamboo (whatever they were) and haul them out to a field where they had a projection booth & screen. If the film broke (frequently) everyone would throw beer cans at the wooden screen. Went from PAS to Scotland - there's a pleasant change and back to PAS in 63. Base had improved; swimming pool, theater (movies were held in the chapel for a while), NCO Club. Ran with Robert (Smooth) L. Stringer, Fred Kern, and Art Beaulieu. Still in touch with Bob Molder who worked for me as an A2C. Mission Supe was Bruce H. Barr. Learned a lot in both tours; fond memories & good friends. Went on to serve 32-1/2 years retiring as a Chief in 1991. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments: I remember the day that I got my orders for Peshawar, W. Pakistan. My first question was "is there an East Pakistan"? My first memories, the heat, the smells and thinking, I'm calling my Dad. I'm not staying here. But stay I did and had a great time meeting people that have become life long friends. We did so much traveling, enjoying not only the people on base but many of the locals. One of the big highlights of each week, the new movie on base that we all went to and of course the many happy hours. Have to say that it was the only time that I was asked to leave an NCO club. The nurses tried to have the guys over for dinner and tried to make cookies and birthday cakes for as many as we could. My maidan name on the rooster is misspelled - it's Leone (not Leon). I would love to know who knew my married name and that I had moved to VA. If anyone knows drop me a line. A few of the nurses that I remember-Elaine Gemma, Jan Connally, June Daniels, Helen Ripple, Jean Norris, another Sandy and a Joyce. Hope to hear from some long lost friends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
