I left PAS and went to Chicksands England, then to Wakanai Japan, Bremerhaven Germany,

Kelly AFB Texas, and last to Nha Trang, Viet Nam. I got out in Texas and moved to California.

I considered becoming a lifer, but Viet Nam changed my mind. All wars are wrong!

Memorial day is a good time to reflect on the past. I remember the great guys at the 6937th and the hard work they did.

Wasn't much to do after work, but flag football and slow pitch helped fill my days. Dog flight had great teams during this period and we did quite well. Charlie got by us in football, with a good QB and TE receiver. They beat us, but barely. i enjoyed playing against them.

Slow pitch was more fun than anything because of all the action. We had a left handed shortstop who was surprisingly good. Most of the guys in the barracks would attend the games and all seemed to enjoy the action.

Does anyone remember the orderly room CO, Sqaudron Commander, who came aboard from the Air Training Command in 66? Seemed he didn't care for 2-T NCOs. He used to throw barracks inspections like crazy.

Well, the memories are fuzzy after 46 years, but still enjoyable. Thanks to my fellow Airmen for a job well done.

I, too, like this guestbook format. I actually enjoyed my tour in Peshawar, both for the good times with friends on base and for the opportunity to experience a completely different culture and visit historical sites off base. My close friends during my tour were Gary Rutledge (lthis site's founder), Joe Ritacco, Joe Bodziony, Mike Jones, Wayne Bradshaw, Rick Blessing, and Rick Hermanson.

I had always been interested in history, and particularly the British Empire. So it was a real treat to visit the Khyber Pass and the areas of the North-West Frontier around Peshawar where so much happened. One time we hired a van and driver to take us fishing in Swat. We camped by the Swat River and caught several trout. As we did not have a license to fish, we got hauled up before the local magistrate who gave us a lecture but let us keep the trout. Hired a local tribesman who guarded our camp. I particularly remember he possessed an old British Enfield .303 rifle, and he let each of us fire a round. I still have the empty cartridge of the one I fired.

Joe Bodziony and I made a one-week trip to Kabul Afghanistan. Many guys took leave and went to Bangkok with lists to purchase rings and gems from James, the jeweler in Bangkok. I also made a Special Services trip to Lahore for three days. It was (and still is) the nicest city in Pakistan.

Cheers,

Bill

I also enjoy this site very much. I’m actually on Facebook but never bothered to look in on the Peshawar Facebook site. I just can’t get excited about Facebook. I like the format of this guest log and

especially like hearing all the names that folks remember. I am still in contact with my dog flight roommate and Mangla Dam travelling partner (Doug Warner – Charleston S.C.). Doug and I, and three or four other ditty boppers went to Mangla almost every three day break. I’m not sure why we felt it was important to go to Mangla to get drunk when it was pretty easy on Peshawar! My sponsors at Mangla were a neat couple from California, and I’m sorry I lost contact with them. I have seen George Binkley’s name mentioned here, and I know George from somewhere, but ?? I will be seeing George at the Misawa reunion in St Louis, in late July, so I plan to pick his brain about our history!

This is a great site -- I've checked in often, but haven't posted anything until now. It's hard to believe that the memories of my official and personal Peshawar experiences are still as clear in my mind as they are after 45 years. And what changes we have witnessed from our time there when Mohammad Ayub Kahn was the president of Pakistan and a king reigned in Afghanistan. Our countries were solidly aligned in cooperative international relations, and we were in the early stages of what has become massive economic and military assistance. What a difference in political and cultural practices between then and now. We were so fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit that area of the world when we did -- God bless our men and women serving in harm's way there now.

I think of the folks I served with while stationed at Peshawar Air Station, and wonder how many are still with us and where they are now and how they are doing. Unfortunately, I recognize only a very few names on the roster. We had an important mission, and while at PAS I had some of the best of all airmen and NCOs supporting me in my 30 years of active duty.

Thanks to all who develop, maintain, and publish this guestbook and the other 6937th Comm Group and Peshawar Air Station informational sites. Take good care everyone.

this is the “mother” sight of 6937th comm. group...i check it daily, just to see if any new people come to it so i can transfer them to facebook with the 6937th alumni association group that try to remember the past...Hugh Sloan emailed me yesterday(he's in Australia right now)said he would “love” to do the REUNION here in Mississippi and that he would look at it when he gets home, so here's hoping something soon?? maybe sometimes last of May 2013?? i have been to the last 3 reunions and loved everyone of them, i think each one is a little better than the last one, guess its the new people Wanda & I get to meet....i've never heard so much talk, like that goes on at reunion...everybody remembers something new.....also, there's that thought that sometimes in the future we might even get back to BADABER??? enjoy this sight and the others and reunions while you can cause times a-flying.

Just checking in as I do from time-to-time. I always enjoy reading the new posts here.

Sometimes it is hard for me to accept that over 46 years have passed since I was at PAS... then I make the mistake of looking in the mirror... which promplty reminds me of my advancing age.

Not sure, but I believe that I may have consumed more beer & whisky during those 15 months than I have in any other period in my life. Not sure I would want to revisit the area, but I wouldn't take anything for the memories.

I really enjoyed the trips to town, Kyber, Swat, etc. Most of the Pakistani people I met were warm and welcoming.. even the one carrying firearms. LOL. Not sure that would be the case in today's world... but I bet the folks in the more rural villages are just the same, friendly.

Just signing back in after some time. We don't want to forget what a great site this is. Facebook keeps us connected but websites offer a deeper ability to connect. My dad was Rocky Eubank, base commander.

I remember my time in Pakistan as a dream. It was a great place to be a kid. I know it was not so great for all of you but honestly, the experience has connected generations at an almost blood level. We experienced something no one else has and no one will ever experience again. I hope we all stay in touch and create a reference for those who come after us to truly understand what was accomplished and how amazing the experience was . History allows us to move forward in an intelligent manner, if we communicate and record it properly. This site has put me in touch school friends. l It's created a deeper meaning for me about what my father accomplished. It's given me new friends that will last a life time and I cannot thank Gary enough for creating it. I hope to see all of you in three years when Rowan graduates and I have more time for reunions!

I don't have any baaaaddd memores of PAS (maybe I have just forgotten them). One of the best parts was the work. Aways interesting and challenging. We started out in trailers before moving into the Ops building. I think one of the other shifts accomplished the physical move and we just reported in at the new duty stations next time around (or maybe I forgot that too).

Roaming downtown, both old and new city was always interesting. Anyone remember old “Wazir” in the curio shop on main street, new city? A real character and hard bargainer. Some of his brassware and wolf axes are just a few feet from me at this moment.

Trips to Khyber (too many to count) and Murree where we stayed in the B&B run by Mr. & Mrs. A. O. Potts. He was retired British Army and they both liked Pakistan so much they just stayed after he hung up the military garb. I am sure they are both long gone and resting in the soil there.

Enjoyable times overall, I never regretted choosing PAS after Tech School at Goodbuddy even though I could have gone to southern Japan. Guess it was meant to be as my next station was Miswawa where I met my wife and we celebrate 49 years in July.

Only regret was (and is) that I had to leave USAFSS after marrying a JN. A stupic rule that was dropped not too much later but by then I had x-trained as a 20650 and didn't go back.

I enjoy reading the messages that are left. I have a lot of great memories of my stay at PAS. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say that it was the best assignment that I had while in the AF. Little do they understand about the great people that were with me.

Any one remember a young (guess we were all young then) that had to be transferred to Germany for emergency treatment in '68? He was from Hobokin. I have a few pictures of him but never put his name in the book. Like many, I didn't think I would ever forget names of friends from that time of my life.

Also there was a Bill Boelton that was in supply, I believe. He was from Minneapolis, MN.

I went to the reunion in MD and had a great time with the “do you remember?” I plan to attend another when it's closer to my neck of the woods.

Take care

ROBERT BAKER, Hope you saw my other note about Chick's picture being available.Glad to here of your interest in Chick. I met Chick on my way over to PAS. He Bob Zaschak , Tom Cochran and I had a great time in Madrid seeing the sights. Chick Bob and I all got put on Able trick so I got to know Chick better (I already knew Bob from Darmstadt) He was a really great guy. He was very soft spoken with a southern drawl. Easy to get along with and had a good sense of humor. A lot smarter than he led you to believe. Don't know of anyone who ever had a problem with him. He,like myself, was a regular visitor to Mangla. We went there on almost every break. Chick usually rode with George Binkley, Will Hopp and Pete Palasota when they went. I usually traveled with another group. I remember when he had the accident but wasn't aware of the seriousness of it. I think we were all pretty short at the time of the accident. Perhaps I knew your wife. Although I've forgotten the names of most everyone we ran around with back then. Anyway thanks for the interest in Chick, I'm sure he'd of had a lot to say to you(even though he probably never knew you existed). Thanks for the rapid reply.----Jim Olson

written down and all of the Doctors and Nurses who were in the room had to be

debriefed. I was in charge of the security detail.

If he was still alive, I was going to look him up and relive that event

with him. Oh well! Now I’m wondering if the injuries were long lasting and

caused his passing. I still stay in touch with Jesse Wayland who was my room

mate. He left a couple months before I did and was discharged at the port. I

stayed in for 20 years. The experiences were well worth it.

Again, thank you for writing. Maybe I’ll hear from some of the guys that

used to hang out around the pool. I was just looking at my pictures from

Peshawar, just a few days ago.

Robert Baker. Just to let you know. There is a picture of Chick carter on this web site, if you are in doubt of the name. Go to Photo Gallery-click on 1960-1965=====scroll down to George Binkley. The 2nd from last photo in his series contains the photo of Chick. Hope this helps.

I find it ironic that Gary has just advised us that there are impediments to the long-term continuation of this great website, including the Facebook crowd that apparently doesn't mind that this site is being overtaken by their creation, and what do we get? A post that encourages us to tap into the PAS Facebook site!!!

Gary, I value this website far more than any Facebook site, but I am afraid that the majority sentiment favors Facebook. One of Friedrich Nietzche's aphorisms, entitled "Laughable," was: "Look, Look! He runs away from men! They follow him, however, because he runs before them. They are a gregarious lot." So much for the herd mentality and social media.

Cheers,

just a reminder for those who don't know, but might be interested, that there is a Facebook group for the 6937th/PAS. we are continually grateful to Gary for this web page as it has brought many many of us in contact with old friends and new ones and has provided a resource for PAS/6937th alumni as well as began us on a journey of many happy and fruitful reunions. Most all of us also found each other through the thoughtful of David Mitchell who directed us to Facebook.if you are currently on Facebook here is a link to the group page:https://www.facebook.com/groups/104994198539/

"They" put me on the architectural committee for the new NSA / NCMF museum ... maybe there is some way for some accommodation to be arrived at for the preservation of the Peshawar alumni site via the NCMF.

One of the interesting trends is to place greater emphasis on recognition of the people involved in all of the great work under difficult conditions that they accomplished.

Difficult, given the security involved.

But these alumni sites are one way of recognizing and remembering all those people and their sacrifices.

Dear Gary, Thank you ever so much for your efforts and accomplishments with this site.I would personally like to see it go on forever. I check it daily just for the hope of finding someone from the past.Doesn't always work to my advantage but someone else may have a new awakening. I'm most happy to hear you will continue. I don't think your efforts will go unrewarded. Your site is a necessary stepping stone to all of us who are computer challenged. It is the easiest to find and the easiest to communicate with. It got me to Facebook and Myfamily(6910th) but I still look here for the new guy first. Any help I can give (remember I'm not computer literate) just ask and I promise I'll put forth an effort for you.Continue for as long as you can, I'll have my ears on daily. Thanks again , Jim Olson

Gary, it would be a shame to see your website end. I think you have done a marvelous job with it I seriously doubt whether most of us would be connected on Facebook had it not been for your website. It seems Facebook fills a different interest than your website. Here we talk about things on a day to day basis. . . your website is a historical preservation of something that can never be duplicated here! If I were discussing Peshawar with someone, www.6037th.org would be the place to go to give them illustrations and information about what it was like. It is a MASTERPIECE! If there is any way I can help preserve its continued existence, please let me know.

To follow up on my posting of Wednesday, 21 March 2012, Gary Rutledge has created a wonderful site here, providing those of us who served in Peshawar with many memories and the opportunity to communicate via comments on the guestbook. Nevertheless, it appears that this great site is being overtaken by the Facebook version of the 6937th, with no more reunions photos posted here, and little activity in the comments section, as well as fewer articles posted.

Gary, my old friend (or anyone else who would care to comment), I think it would be unfortunate if this site were to fade away, but that is what appears to be happening. The Facebook crowd has taken over. I have no interest in joining Facebook, and, thus, I would like to see this site continue operating in a vibrant manner. Where do you see this site going? Do you think it will remain viable? Or will it wither away?

Cheers,

Bill

Unfortunately, Chuck, it seems that reunion photos are no longer posted on this site. I asked about it some time ago and was told that all the reunion photos are on the 6937th's Facebook site. For those of us (such as myself) who want nothing to do with Facebook (I have real friends and do not wish to be "friended" by people I do not know), this is a loss.

In fact, I am afraid that Facebook has overtaken this wonderful site that Gary Rutledge established. I think it is a shame, and I wonder how much longer this site will exist as a forum for those of us who served in Peshawar. Gary, my old friend, if you happen to read this, could you please post a message advising us of your assessment of the continued viability of this site? I would hate to see it wither away because of the Facebook crowd, but then, I am just an old-fashioned Luddite.

Cheers,

Bill

Dear respected elite,

I am just a curious man of Pakistani origin, whose family is been portrait business for the past 108 years. When I was a young fella, I used to visit my uncle who had a studio in Peshawar, across from the USIS, by the name of Zaidi's Photographers. He would have US AF personal at his studio getting their portraits taken and having their films processed. It was a great time in US Pakistan relations. The K setries satellites had not gone up yet and the U2 use to fly over the USSR from Peshawar. Peshawar was abig listening base. Then Francis Gray Powers was shot down in Russia nad that slowly did away with all that . I would like to hear from anyone who use to frequent Zaidi's or Band Box Dry Cleaners in Peshawar Cantt.

I remember yellow school buses bring personal to town to shop etc.

This site is great. I just wish guys would come back to the site. I have been trying to reach buds from the day that had posted on the site years ago. E-mail addresses are no good now. Any one know of Dave Silverwatch? He is one I have been trying. He posted once back in 03.

I Have come to this site a few times and thought I should sign the guest book. I 've been in contact with a couple of the guys I served with and that makes me come back to the site more often to see if I can find anyone else. I remember Ned Whelan and I see he signed the guest book,I don't know if he remembers One of my roomates was Jack Danford and I beleive he was from Kentucky. That's it for now I will be checking back often now that I've been in contact with a few people I knew.

Charlie: George Olsen was your record operator, I was your analyst until I went to all days, then Jim Peneton was the Dawg analyst. Still have some of the performance reports you filled out about me. BOY DID I HAVE YOU SNOWED!! Actually you were very generous with your ratings of my work. I sure did love that job and I guess it showed in my work.

Fugi's last name was Fukoba if I remember correctly but I sure can't remember his first name, I think it might have been Larry or Lawrence, not sure. Were you thinking of Ralph Sandercock as the name you couldn't remember? I think he was one of us Dawgs. I will did back through my old orders and see if I can verify Fugi's name. Fun dusting off the memory and then having more forgotten names etc surface.

Bob: Your right on about Bill Bauman and Ritter. Ritter always drawing something and Bauman wearing the tightest T-shirts to show off his biceps. I believe Bauman got a huge inheritance (maybe millions) from his grandmother just before he went home. Also right on about Olsen being George, he was my analyst.

Jim; Checked the photo and there was Al Fricke as I pictured him. Also noticed Harvey Hogue that I had forgotten about. Another name that has come to mind is ??? Sandelin (sp ? ) Wispy kind of guy on my flight. Also an oriental guy, maybe Fugie ?

A long time ago and fewer brain cells now to remember everything.

Chuck, If you look at my pictures on the "Gallery" - 66-69, there is a picture of Al Fricke and myself. He was my roommate for a few weeks when I first arrived at PAS.

Quite a few memories from Peshawar. I checked out the website and found it of note that there were NO notes about the Pak-Indian war during the summer of '65. Bombs landing closer to PAS than to the targeted Pak AFB 4 miles away. And how the Pak govt said that we were letting the Indians use the moonlight reflecting off the top of our water tower. And how the commander had the top covered with mud by a couple of laborers w/mops out of buckets hauled up by ropes. No foreign flights, including ours for re-supply. We ran out of beer first, then the good whiskey, then ... nothing at all. When the govt lifted the ban, we were playing a flag football game on the hard-pan field when we heard the C-130 overhead. We interrupted the game to wait for the first flatbed to arrive at the gate and followed it on our bikes, first to the O-Club to off-load their goodies, then to the NCO Club to deliver ours. Nothing like warm beer.

Charlie Schriver - Olsen's first name was George. Went through tech school with him and Warren Carretta who was assigned to Special Projects after arriving at PAS so he didn't work with us. Warren would come into our area from time to time to observe and always seemed confused by what he saw on the scopes. At the time we never could get any of those guys to let on what they were doing out back in their little van.

Dennis - While on Dawg my room mates were Bill (Willy) Bauman and LeRoy Ritter. If memory serves be right, Willy was into weight lifting and worked out all the time. Had red hair an a pretty wild Yosemite Sam mustache. LeRoy was a pretty good artist and spent a good bit of time drawing with chalk and colored pencils to help kill time.

Good times.

PS. I'm still in contact with Jim Peneton via email a couple of times a week.

I remember Lt. Michael Beverage - he came in 67 and replaced Tisdale on Able flight. I also remember his wife - especially at the pool !! He was from Nebraska - or at least graduated from U of Neb and did play football on the Able team - running back. He wrote a letter of recommendation for me when I left PAS.

Does anyone recall a 2lt Beveridge as flight commander of Able flight? Some Able troops remember lt. Tisdale, from 1966, but others are having a tough time with Beveridge as his successor in 1967. Any help out there?

I think he played flag football and had a very lovely bride who often wore go-go boots.

Comments:

I was there when JFK was assassinated. We went on alert but I don't remember us having any weapons. Who would trust an Air Force guy with a sidearm? We visited the Khyber Pass, of course, Taxila and other places including some bazaars. The job was exciting but the area was not one of my favorite places.
